So here we are – another year over, a new one just begun… Happy New 2014, everyone!
What shall we do this year?
Our Food Group is going strong and we are launching an Energy Group this month. Other Transition Towns have Garden Share projects, knitting and sewing groups, film clubs and even the odd community-owned brewery. If any of these ideas take your fancy, or you are mulling over some community-run projects of your own, pop along to one of our Transition Drinks evenings at the Garland to talk them over. We’re there on the 3rd Tuesday of every month, and details of the January one are below.
Energy group launch
As announced in last month’s newsletter, we are launching the Transition Redhill Energy Group this month.
The aim of the Energy Group is to help establish more sustainable use and supply of energy in and around Redhill, to minimise our contribution to climate change and improve our local resilience in the face of diminishing supplies of cheap and accessible fossil fuels. (And reducing our reliance on the Big Six energy companies and their annual well-above-inflation price rises wouldn’t hurt either.)
The Energy Group will have two goals:
- To reduce the amount of energy we use.
- To generate as much of our energy as possible locally using renewable technology.
There is much we can do as a community, from eco-refurbishment of our homes and buildings, to encouraging more sustainable construction of our new buildings, to generating our own energy from renewable and low carbon sources. This will mean working with individuals, community groups, businesses, policy makers and other organisations, to help turn vision into practical reality.
The Energy Group launch meeting will be on Tuesday 28 January (see below). Please feel free to get in touch beforehand if you have ideas that you would like to discuss at the meeting – or just come along.
When: Tuesday, 28 January 2014 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
Where: The Garland, 5 Brighton Road, Redhill, Surrey RH1 6PP (Map) (We will be in the function room at the back of the pub)
If the arrival of a New Year has inspired you to get on your bike more, this event on Sunday 19 January at Redhill YMCA is for you. Buy a restored second-hand bike or donate a bike for restoration; have your bike checked over by a free Dr Bike service; discover new town and country cycle routes; or get cycling advice from a team of professionals. See this page for more information.
Our first monthly Transition Drinks of 2014.
We will be in the main bar at the Garland. Come along for a chat and see what we have been doing and what we have planned. If you have ideas about what we ought to be doing, so much the better.
We’ll be there from 8, probably until 9.30 or so, so drop in any time in between.
When: Tuesday, 21 January 2014 @ 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm
Where: The Garland, 5 Brighton Road, Redhill, Surrey RH1 6PP (Map)
